staged - Identity and Role Play

Under the title "Staged: Identity and Role Play", the in focus gallery highlights questions about identity against the backdrop of artistic role play in photography.

"All the world's a stage. And all women and men mere players.", Shakespeare, 1599

The in focus Gallery, Burkhard Arnold presents an exhibition from October, 11th, 2022 to February 1st, 2023 in which photography is used as a stage for the artistic questioning of identities.

In dealing with the themes of identity, its construction, transformation and fiction, the camera is used as a mirror for stagings of the self - or the other.
Masquerade, costuming and the performative game as an artistic practice form the common starting point of the works shown. These show how artists test the limits of what is acceptable, try out new social roles and break social taboos. The exhibition opens up a panorama of the exploration of the staged self between playful, ironic and social views of the theme of identity and brings together works by Elliott Erwitt (USA), Sissi Farassat (A), Toto Frima (NL), Gilbert Garcin (F), Cindy Marler (NL), Anne Arden McDonald (USA), Jan Saudek (CZ) and Christine Webster (NZL).
