biography infocusgalerie burkhard arnold

Sabine Weiss (* 28.12.2021) was born in Switzerland in 1924 and learned the craft of photography in the studio of Paul Boissonnas in Geneva.
In 1946 she moved to Paris at the age of 22 and worked there as an assistant in the studio of the famous fashion photographer Willy Maywald until 1950. After that she established herself as a freelance photographer.
In Paris, she met her future husband, the English painter Hugh Weiss.
In 1952 Sabine Weiss was invited on the recommendation of the Parisian photographer Robert Doisneau in the photo agency "Rapho", which also represented the famous photographer Willy Ronis.
From there she worked for magazines such as The New York Times Magazine, Life, Newsweek, Vogue, Point de vue - Images du monde, Paris Match, Esquire and Holiday.
Her photographs have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Walker Art Center of Minneapolis, which made her famous in the United States. In 1955, Edward Steichen chose photographs of her for his famous exhibition at the New York Museum of Modern Art, The Family of Man.
Since the end of the seventies her work has been appreciated more and more at various festivals and in exhibitions. At the age of 60, a new, very personal work is created, characterized by her travels through France, Egypt, India, Reunion, Bulgaria and Burma.
In 1987, Sabine Weiss was awarded the "Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres" and in 1999 "Officier des arts et des lettres". Even at the age of 90 years, the photographer is still active.
