In the 1950s and '60s, there were about 4000 drive-in movie theaters in the United States; 15-20 years later, only a few still existed. Scattered throughout the country, only strange remnants, such as huge projection screens attached to 2 posts and typefaces, reminded us of the heyday of "drive in" movie theaters. Herman van den Boom's photographs show the remnants of former cultural sites he discovered in 1976, in desolate, seemingly abandoned vast landscapes of the USA, to which life was once breathed, albeit mostly only temporarily, by the "Drive In" cinemas.
